The New York Giants made the shocking decision to bench veteran quarterback and former Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson after Sunday night’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs dropped the team to 0-3 on the season.
Now, the starting job belongs to former Ole Miss Rebels star Jasxon Dart, who New York selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. However, Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll is making it clear that he doesn’t necessarily believe that Dart is ready for his first start, but that he’s rolling with him anyway.
“I don’t think any rookie QB is ever just ready to play. You put him in there because you think that he’s done enough to show you that he can go out there and compete, and he’s done that every step of the way. That’s why I made the decision,” Daboll said, via Charlotte Carroll.
Fans reacted to Carroll’s statement on social media.
“Long before they were 0-3 and the season over, I said Dart shouldn’t take one snap this year. Panic decision by the team,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Daboll is an idiot hoping for lightning in a bottle. He’s got 2 veteran QBs and is going to ruin a rookie behind this line,” another fan added.
“I never liked the Russ signing. I get Winston. I would have liked Winston starting season and then work in Dart. Wilson at this point in his career isn’t the QB that fits in Dabolls type of offense. Winston fits that a lot more making the transition to Dart seamless,” someone else added.
It’ll be interesting to see how Dart does in his first taste of professional action.
