Both New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and co-owner John Mara have voiced support for starting quarterback Daniel Jones. But that doesn’t mean they don’t want some extra help at the position as well. Turns out they’ll be looking to a familiar face to provide that backup.

According to reports, the Giants are looking to sign Davis Webb following the results of a physical on Monday. Webb was the Giants’ third-round pick in 2017 but only spent one season with the team before being waived.

Once briefly considered the heir apparent for Eli Manning, Webb’s NFL career has been spent mostly on the practice squad. Daboll is familiar with Webb as he’s been with the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad since 2019 with brief appearances on the team roster. The former Texas Tech and Cal quarterback also spent a year with the New York Jets.

In his entire NFL career, Webb has never thrown a pass in the NFL, though he does have two rushing attempts for negative three yards from a time he lined up in victory formation with the Jets this past season. While the Giants certainly aren’t going to hope that Webb sees significant time on the field during regular-season games this upcoming season, if he does, perhaps he’ll finally be able to pad those stats.

In the meantime, the news of Webb’s return to the Giants generated some interesting discussions.
