Just a day after releasing him to get their roster to the NFL-mandated 53-player limit, the Giants re-signed quarterback Tommy DeVito on Wednesday to their practice squad.

DeVito signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft. He actually got the bulk of the snaps in the Giants’ three preseason games, going 43-64 for 453 yards and a pair each of touchdowns and interceptions as the team went 1-2.

DeVito has a strong familiarity with the New York/New Jersey area, as he was born and raised in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, just 11 miles away from Metlife Stadium.

DeVito committed to Syracuse and appeared in seven games as a redshirt freshman, mostly in relief of injured started Eric Dungey. He went 44-87 with four touchdowns in those seven games. His best season at Syracuse came as a sophomore when DeVito won the starting job and went 213-337 for 2,360 yards and 19 passing touchdowns, the most for an Orange quarterback since Ryan Nassib’s 26 in 2012.

While it seemed like DeVito could build upon the success of his sophomore year, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury after just four games in 2020 and lost the starting job to Garrett Schrader after just three games in the 2021 season.

DeVito ultimately chose to transfer from Syracuse and spent his final year of college at Illinois. He went 257-369 with 2,650 yards and 21 total touchdowns (15 passing, six rushing), and led the Illini to the 2023 ReliaQuest Bowl, where they suffered a 19-10 loss to Mississippi State.
