Earlier this week, the Denver Broncos made a major coaching decision, firing head coach Nathaniel Hackett midway through his first season as the team’s head coach. And while some possible coaches have emerged that might draw the team’s interest, Broncos CEO Greg Penner revealed some unique plans for the team’s next head coach.
While Broncos general manager George Paton will be returning to the team, it sounds like he will no longer be running the football operations. Instead, it sounds like those duties will go to the next head coach based on recent comments from Greg Penner.
“I’ve worked with a lot of great CEOs, and it starts with really strong leadership,” Penner said regarding the coaching position, according to Pro Football Talk. “That’s going to be the most critical factor here in a head coach. Obviously, the X’s and O’s are important, but we need a strong leader for this organization that’s focused on winning. That starts with culture. It’s instilling a sense of accountability and discipline. We need an identity on offense. At the starting point, it has to be about culture and leadership. Those characteristics are what we’ll be focused on the most.”
Time will tell who the Broncos ultimately choose to replace Hackett, but it’s clear they will place a lot of responsibility on him.
