The Houston Texans placed clear expectations on former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud when they selected the two-time Heisman Trophy finalist with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Stroud is competing with veteran Davis Mills for the starting quarterback position, and Stroud, speaking at an autograph signing and appearance in Katy, Texas, revealed that he’s happy with how he’s performed thus far but acknowledged he still has room to approve.

“I feel like I’ve done well,” Stroud told KPRC 2 on Sunday.  “(Organized team activities and minicamp) was something I wanted to just put my best in and just be a great leader as well as a great player, soak in the playbook, soak in coaching and be as best I can. I think that was a good start, a good routine to get into training camp and do better there.”

The Texans’ camp starts July 26 in Houston.

According to KPRC 2, first-year Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has recognized Stroud’s “maturity, attention to detail, and inquisitive nature.” Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil has gone as far as to call Stroud “QB1” in a social media post.

Stroud added that he’s been working out at the University of Houston while trying to build chemistry with his receiving corps.

“It was good, definitely just building chemistry trying to get timing down and trying to be as best we can so we can get to training camp and dominate,” Stroud said. “That was the goal for that one to keep building and have a good offseason.”
