Let the Jimmy G sweepstakes begin! Now that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been cleared to practice, trade discussions for his services and an interesting potential suitor have emerged in the Atlanta Falcons.

NFL reporter Matt Lombardo spoke with a “long-time NFL personnel evaluator,” who felt as though the Falcons might need more time before feeling like they can hand the keys to Desmond Ridder.

“Don’t be surprised if the Falcons jump in,” the evaluator told Lombardo. “You aren’t going to know about Desmond Ridder for two or three years, at best, and they can’t afford to wait that long.”

Although the Falcons drafted Ridder and have Marcus Mariota on the roster, they may not have too much confidence in either this season, especially if they are looking at Garoppolo. Atlanta is in the process of rebuilding after trading long-time starting quarterback Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts earlier this year.

As most know, Jimmy G lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship last year, took them to a Super Bowl a few years ago, and is a 2-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots as Tom Brady’s backup.

Garoppplo in the past has beaten the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Dak Prescott, and Matthew Stafford. He may not be in the same class as those three but he is a winner and is experienced, something the Falcons could certainly use.

All the teams in the NFC South made major improvements to increase their playoff chances except the Falcons. Most have accepted that they were in a rebuilding process and this year is most likely to be a wash, but if the reports are to be believed, the Falcons are not ready to fly the white flag just yet.
