J.J Watt

One of the saddest things about J.J. Watt’s sudden and unexpected retirement announcement Dec. 27 is that the Arizona Cardinals had already played their final home game.

That meant the legendary defensive player would not get a big farewell from the home fans in his final game.

Not to worry, though — the San Francisco 49ers and their fans paid an incredible tribute to Watt Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. The 49ers showed a highlight video of Watt’s legendary career, and when he left the game at the 2-minute warning, 49ers fans saluted him with a standing ovation. Even San Francisco players enthusiastically cheered him.

Watt had two sacks Sunday, and finishes his career with 114.5. He also had 317 QB hits, 195 tackles for a loss and 27 forced fumbles. He won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors a record-tying three times. There is a place waiting for him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Watt earned the appreciation of Cardinals and NFL fans even before the game. On the plane trip to California, Watt sported a Pat Tillman shirt, honoring Arizona’s former defensive back who joined the Army after the 2001 NFL season. he was killed in Afghanistan in 2004.

Watt collected well wishes from countless players and coaches on the field after the game.

Watt later thanked everyone from his teammates to coaches to fans.

“I’m just a man full of love and gratitude,” he said.
