After an embarrassing loss to the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend, the Carolina Panthers have already made a number of big and important decisions, firing multiple assistant coaches and activating former first-round pick Sam Darnold from injury. But the team is also making another decision on a veteran quarterback, parting ways with former Georgia Bulldogs and Washington Huskies quarterback Jacob Eason.

According to a report from NFL league insider Ari Meirov of Pro Football Focus, the Panthers have released Jacob Eason from the team’s practice squad.

Eason, who was selected in the fourth round by the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, has appeared in just two NFL games throughout his career – once for the Colts in 2021 and once for the Panthers against the Los Angeles Rams earlier this season.

In total, Eason has attempted just 10 passes in his career, completing five of them for 84 yards. However, he has also thrown two interceptions.

The NFL world had plenty to say about Eason’s departure.

With Eason’s departure and Darnold’s activation, the Panthers now have three quarterbacks vying for the team’s starting quarterback spot going forward. Baker Mayfield was named the starter at the beginning of the season, but he was replaced by P.J. Walker midway through the season after suffering an injury.

However, Walker was benched on Sunday in favor of Mayfield, leading to questions about the team’s plans at the position.
