Last week, Jalen Hurts signed a massive new deal with the Philadelphia Eagles that made him the highest-paid player in the history of the NFL. But some recent comments that he’s made about his recent contract seem to have drawn quite a few negative reactions from the NFL world.
On Monday morning, Jalen Hurts conducted a press conference with reporters where he discussed his new contract extension with the team. During the media availability, Hurts was asked about his decision not to seek a fully-guaranteed deal from the team. And during his answer, he implied that he was selflessly giving the team a discount with his new contract to allow them to sign more talent around him, according to James Palmer.
“#eagles QB Jalen Hurts was asked why he didn’t want a fully guaranteed contract. Hurts went on to say when you look at the best teams in the league ‘it takes a village.’ Hurts added that they have something special building in Philly.” Palmer said in a tweet on Monday.

“Money is nice. Championships are better.

Hurts then had a blunt message: “Money is nice. Championships are better.”
Obviously, these comments caused quite a stir in the NFL world with plenty of people pointing out that it’s insane for the highest-paid player in the history of the league to act like he was giving his team a discount. Not only that but whether or not the contract is fully guaranteed has no impact on the salary cap going forward.
Hurts was blasted for the quote.

Good answer to the question, I suppose. But let's not act like he gave the Eagles a discount here lol https://t.co/YNE8MrffZ0

The highest paid player in NFL history is talking like he took a hometown discount 🙄 https://t.co/iRkfbnf3gi

Fully guaranteed has nothing to do w/ ability to sign other players.
He signed a contract w/ a league high APY… https://t.co/MoUuSvFrWf— Daniel Rees (@DPRees8) April 24, 2023
And Hurt was very unlikely to get a fully guaranteed deal even if he played hardball https://t.co/wgF0v6IceX

I just want to point out that this does not impact getting your deal gtd
If it takes a village…then sign for less money https://t.co/fhbPYd8jqv

Hurts didn’t get a fully guaranteed contract, but to insist he gave a hometown discount to help his team is laughable.
