Changing a narrative takes time. When the narrative is constantly fed and it never seems to change, you may have a problem on your hands.

For Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, he can’t break the thought that he is an unsuccessful quarterback in the NFL. Do they have a point?

Going 9-15 in his first 24 games as a starter tend to feed the “loser” talk. At Florida State, he was 25-1 and led the Seminoles to one of their more successful seasons in recent memory, an undefeated year that ended with a national championship. That now seems like a lifetime ago and it doesn’t even feel like Winston is the same player. Throwing 39 touchdowns and 24 interceptions over a season and a half in the NFL puts him in the “middling” category.

When asked about his team’s 3-5 start this year, Winston spoke bluntly.

“Confidence-wise, it’s easy, because I’m not a loser, we’re winners in this building. And I believe it’s a choice. It’s a mentality that we’ve gotta have and we’re building. We’re heading on the right path. We just gotta get over the hump, and I’m going to do what I need to do to help us get over there.”

Winston knows what to say when he gets behind a microphone and seems to be a leader that people rally around. As time passes and the team continues not to win, it doesn’t matter if his speeches go over well with the team, it has to lead to a tangible product on the field. If and when he does that, he can shut his critics up.
