It was presumed early on that Amazon founder and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos would be the front-runner to buy the Washington Commanders from Dan Snyder.

However, that’s not how it’s going to play out.

Bezos has reportedly dropped out of the running to purchase the NFL franchise from Snyder, per Front Office Sports.

“Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will not bid on the Washington Commanders, a source with knowledge of the situation told Front Office Sports,” the site noted Wednesday.

Back in February, Bezos hired banking firm Allen & Company to help him explore a bid, and reps have been said to have monitored the bidding process since then. However, the billionaire decided that he would rather spend his money elsewhere.

This would essentially make the group led by Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris the only legitimate contender to buy the franchise. That group also includes Magic Johnson while Robert Griffin III had said he’s been asked to be part of it as well.

There was speculation early on that Snyder didn’t want to sell the team to Bezos due to the coverage he received in the Washington Post. Front Office Sports added that their source said “There’s a feeling within Bezos’ camp that he has been used to push the bidding by others in the franchise to a higher level.”

The NFL world certainly had some thoughts about the news.

We’ll see if a sale announcement is coming in the near future.
