As the Zach Wilson era added yet another dark chapter Thursday night, New York Jets fans mercilessly booed their quarterback.
They cheered when Wilson got benched in favor of little-known backup Chris Streveler, who immediately brought the offense to life.
Fans have been down on Wilson all year, from his immature reaction to a loss earlier this season that landed him on the bench, to his inconsistent play, including Thursday night’s debacle against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Legendary Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has seen it happen before, when the team’s fan base sours on a quarterback. In Revis’ case, the quarterback he witnessed losing the fans was Hall of Famer Brett Favre.
Revis tweeted his thoughts on Wilson’s fate, drawing the comparisons to Favre, who spent one season with the Jets, in 2008. (Cut Revis some slack for misspelling Favre’s name.)
“Zach Wilson has lost the trust of the Jet fanbase,” Revis tweeted. “I’m not saying it’s impossible. It will be very hard to regain their trust again. I witnessed these same boos when Brett Favre was under center.”

Revis isn’t the first Jets legend to weigh in on Wilson’s struggles this year. Quarterback Joe Namath said earlier this season that Wilson should have taken responsibility for his poor play in a loss to the New England Patriots. It’s hard to believe that a player selected No. 2 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft might have worn out his welcome in New York barely 18 months later, but here we are.
