The New York Jets continue to shuffle their quarterback lineup in the wake of Aaron Rodgers’ Week 1 injury. They started by going to backup Zach Wilson, then benched him for Tim Boyle during a loss to the Buffalo Bills. Boyle then started their last two games (losses to the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons), but was benched for Trevor Siemian partway through that 13-8 loss to the Falcons. And the team has now cut him entirely and signed Brett Rypien off the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad:
I’m told the #Jets are signing QB Brett Rypien off of Seattle’s practice squad and are releasing Tim Boyle, per source.

Boyle played in college at UConn (2013-15) and Eastern Kentucky (2016-17), then went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft. He signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent after that draft and stayed in their organization through 2020, appearing in 11 games but never starting. He’s since had stints with the Detroit Lions (2021) and Chicago Bears (2022), but has only started five NFL games (three with the Lions, two with the Jets), losing them all.
In his NFL career to date, Boyle has completed 114 of 183 passes (62.3 percent) for 934 yards with four touchdowns and 12 interceptions. In three games with the Jets this year (one as a backup, two as a starter), he completed 48 of 77 passes (also 62.3 percent) for 360 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions.
Rypien played in college at Boise State from 2015-18, then signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He stayed there through 2022, then joined the Los Angeles Rams this offseason. He’s started four NFL games to date, three with the Broncos and one with the Rams, and has posted 98 completions on 168 attempts (58.3 percent) for 950 yards with four touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The Rams cut Rypien earlier this year after he struggled (13 completions on 28 attempts, 46.4 percent, for 130 yards with no touchdowns and an interception plus two fumbles) in his start against the Green Bay Packers. We’ll see if he gets to play with the Jets, or if they stick with Siemian (boosted to Boyle’s backup in Week 12, he had five completions on 13 attempts, 38.5 percent, for 66 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in relief of Boyle Sunday) as their starter going forward.
