In case you were still wondering if the San Francisco 49ers are committed to second-year quarterback Trey Lance and have moved on from former starter Jimmy Garoppolo, a former 49ers coach seemed to say what the franchise has been thinking for some time now.

According to “a one-time Niners coach,” the team started to have doubts about Garoppolo after he signed his $137 million contract with the team. The coach told the San Francisco Chronicle’s Mike Silver that the quarterback simply dropped off the face of the earth, as far as they were concerned.

“Once he left that press conference [announcing the extension] nobody heard from him for weeks and weeks,” the coach said. “He didn’t return calls, he didn’t return texts — he basically just vanished. And we were looking at each other going, ‘What just happened?”

Garoppolo signed that deal in 2018, so feel free to peruse the coaching staff from that season to try and figure out who this coach is.

This is not the first time someone has questioned Garoppolo. Some of his ex-New England Patriots teammates questioned his toughness when he played for them. His current teammates, however, had nothing but good things to say about the quarterback during his time there.

You never heard a bad thing about the guy, but some in the media are still wondering if the team is making a mistake by going with Lance and trading Garoppolo. It might be in the franchise’s best interest to make Jimmy look bad in order to justify their move further.  But by doing this, are the 49ers hurting his trade value? Time will tell.

It seems at least the Cleveland Browns are still in the picture.
