The San Francisco 49ers had a deal in place that would have sent Jimmy Garoppolo to the Washington Commanders. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Commanders and 49ers had made a deal for the quarterback until Garoppolo had shoulder surgery.
The 49ers had the parameters of a trade agreement in place that would have sent Jimmy Garoppolo to the Commanders at this year's scouting combine, but the deal fell apart once the QB decided to have shoulder surgery, per source.https://t.co/DOWvPgZ41c

Jimmy G’s shoulder surgery seemed to have turned a lot of teams off, including Washington, the Cleveland Browns, and the Carolina Panthers, all of which were in talks with the 49ers about the then-backup. That’s especially true for Cleveland, whom many thought would take Jimmy G with the suspension of Deshaun Watson but they decided to trust in Jacoby Brissett.
The Commanders decided to trade for Carson Wentz instead and the Panthers traded for Baker Mayfield. You have to wonder now if any of those teams have regretted not going after Jimmy G.
The 49ers clearly had more questions about Trey Lance than they care to admit which is maybe why they decided not to shop around the quarterback. Luckily for them, it worked out in their favor after Lance was injured last week. Now, Garoppolo will have the chance to prove once more that he’s still a capable starter, which will have a significant impact on his free agency value this offseason.
