The San Francisco 49ers have had some bad luck lately with injuries. Now, starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has gone down.

The quarterback limped to the sideline after being sacked early in the game Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

Garoppolo went to the locker room on a cart and was quickly listed as questionable to return with an ankle injury.

Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy replaced Garoppolo, and he did throw an early touchdown:

But, with no offense to the former Iowa State star, a 49ers team with Super Bowl aspirations needs Garoppolo back under center ASAP.

Dr. Nirav Pandya, M.D., who comments on sports injuries on Twitter, noted that “Barring any fractures seen on X-ray, the concern for Jimmy Garoppolo given that mechanism would be a high ankle sprain. Hoping it’s not.”

Garoppolo entered the day with 2,381 passing yards this year, with 16 touchdowns to only four interceptions. While the veteran doesn’t put up gaudy stats, he doesn’t need to with the 49ers’ stout defense.

NFL fans on Twitter wonder just how far the 49ers can go if this turns out to be a serious injury.

Noooo @JimmyG_10 !!! Prayers up!” tweeted longtime NFL star cornerback Richard Sherman.

“Trey Lance likely to be activated off of IR. It was going to happen regardless of Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury,” tweeted Mark Olson.

And some are already musing what this might mean for Trey Lance.
