Denver Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway doesn’t have many regrets as an NFL player. However, he does have one big one as a general manager.
Elway admitted in a recent interview that he regrets not drafting Allen in 2018 when he had a chance.
“Last year I played [golf] with him and I’m wondering, ‘How long is it going to take him to realize that I passed on him and took Bradley Chubb instead and it took him two and a half holes,” Elway said during the Pardon My Take podcast. “And I loved him. But it just didn’t work out. He was my type. That was probably my biggest mistake of my GM days, was not taking Josh.”
Coming out of college, there were a lot of questions about Allen, so it was understandable why he may have passed on the Wyoming product. Allen was only completing 56 percent of his passes while playing for the Cowboys. Meanwhile, Chubb was one of the best pass rushers in the country, who turned out to be injury-prone.
Chubb was later traded to the Miami Dolphins. Instead of drafting Allen, Elway took a chance on Case Keenum, who had just come off a monster year for the Minnesota Vikings, while also drafting Paxton Lynch. Both moves were major flops.
Meanwhile, Allen has put up MVP-type numbers with the Buffalo Bills and has taken them to the AFC Championship game.
You have to wonder where the Broncos would be right now if Elway had gone with his gut and drafted Allen.
