The New York Jets have not had a good go of things over the last few years. The Aaron Rodgers era was an unmitigated disaster that saw Rodgers contribute to all of five wins as the starting quarterback over two seasons.
The Jets brought in Justin Fields to be the starting quarterback this season, but New York won only three games under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn. Glenn has responded by letting go of multiple members of his staff.
On Monday, he parted ways with yet another assistant, according to one prominent insider.
“The #Jets are parting ways with OC Tanner Engstrand, per me and (Tom Pelissero),” reported NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday.
The Jets reached out to one legendary head coach to add to the staff, but the interest was reportedly unreciprocated.
“The #Jets reached out to Jon Gruden about the idea of joining Aaron Glenn’s staff, according to multiple sources. Gruden wasn’t interested in the job,” Zack Rosenblatt reported on Tuesday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Gruden turning it down is just as loud as the outreach itself. If this was a serious football opportunity, his lack of interest says a lot about how the league views the Jets internally,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I don’t think Gruden is going to be anyone’s OC. He’s a Super Bowl winning head coach. He’s taking a head coaching job, or nothing. I know being a Jet fan is brutal right now, but this isn’t a huge deal,” someone else added.
“Just fire Glenn at this point and get it over with… unfortunately for him, no real talent will join a staff that the writings on the wall for in 2027,” one fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see who Glenn can bring in to help him right the ship.
