The last we heard, Jon Gruden and the NFL were not on speaking terms.
Turns out, Gruden was welcomed back to an NFL team facility this week, and fans are scratching their head about how and why.
According to Saints insider Jeff Duncan, Gruden spent a portion of this week working with New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr as they begin to put their offensive installation into place. Given that Gruden is known as a quarterback guru and coached Carr with the Las Vegas Raiders, it makes a lot of sense on paper.
However, Gruden had seemingly been persona non grata with the NFL since he left the Raiders in 2021 amidst leaked emails from an NFL investigation that showed him to use racist, homophobic, and misogynistic language routinely. Gruden has since sued the NFL, but the outcome of those legal issues remains in limbo.
That makes it all the more confusing that Gruden would not only want to be associated with an NFL team right now but that he would be allowed to join them at practice.
“Why is he allowed to be involved in football again? Hes dont literally nothing to show remorse or that he’s learned his lesson. ******* ridiculous but expected because the NFL is gutless,” wrote one fan.
“That racist, Homophobic, Sexist piece of **** doesn’t get to duck for a couple of years and then make a comeback. Y’all need to do better,” said another.
“Not surprised. Racism, homophobia-they don’t care. If you won the big game a couple of decades ago, welcome back!” said another fan.
We’ll see if this means Gruden is going to return to the NFL in an official manner, and whether or not he’ll have to say something about his terrible emails.
