It’s no secret that throughout the NFL, running backs have seemingly lost their value in recent years with fewer and fewer teams willing to pay veteran, proven running backs, instead opting for younger and more inexpensive options either in free agency or the draft. As Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor nears the end of his rookie contract, he has that in the back of his mind.
“You definitely have to pay attention, just so you know, ‘OK, what type of space are you entering into?'” Taylor said according to ESPN. “And you just hope from the track record here [in Indianapolis] that things are being evaluated the right way.”
As for the state of the running back market around the league, Jonathan Taylor had a pretty brutal message to the teams that aren’t valuing their veteran running backs.
“You see why guys request trades,” Taylor said. “They just want to feel valued by not only their coaches, their teammates, but the organization as well.”
As for his own contract, however, it seems he is optimistic that they will be able to work out a long-term deal.
“We definitely have approached [the contract],” he said. “Hopefully they can see the value.”
