Earlier this year, the New York Jets decided to move on from Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback after two disappointing seasons. And it looks like the team has officially found his replacement.
According to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the New York Jets have decided to sign former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year deal to replace Aaron Rodgers as their next starting quarterback.
“The #Jets are signing QB Justin Fields, per me and @TomPelissero, as Gang Green gets a new starter. Fields says goodbye to Pittsburgh after 1 year,” Rapoport said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
“He gets a 2-year deal worth $40M with $30M guaranteed,” Rapoport continued.
Fields spent the first three seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears after the team selected him in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but they replaced him with Caleb Williams last season, selecting the former Heisman Trophy winner with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
After he was replaced in Chicago, Fields signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he ultimately lost the starting job to Russell Wilson. However, he still got the chance to start six games for the team with Wilson beginning the season injured, leading the team to a 4-2 record during that span, during which he accounted for 10 touchdowns and just one interception.
Fields will now team up with his former Ohio State Buckeyes teammate Garrett Wilson.
We’ll have to see how he fares as the starting quarterback for the Jets.
