Indianapolis Colts Visit The San Francisco 49ers For Nfl Week 7 At Levi S Stadium In Santa Clara Calif Sunday Oct 24 2021

On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers lost their fourth consecutive game, a 30-18 home loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

While perhaps the Niners get a little bit of a break considering the game was played in a monsoon, that’s not much solace to fans who were expecting to see this team compete for the NFC West title.

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo finished the game 16-of-27 passing for 181 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. That makes this third straight game with at least one interception for Garoppolo and considering that Trey Lance is waiting in the wings, there have been calls for head coach Kyle Shanahan to give the rookie a shot as the starter.

While Shanahan isn’t making a move just yet, his comment after the game certainly didn’t inspire too much confidence in Garoppolo.

“I would guess so,” Shanahan said when asked if Garoppolo would remain the starter. “I’m going to watch this tape and see if guys are healthy first of all. I don’t even know where our guys are at. It was good for Jimmy to be able to get healthy enough to play in this game today.”

To be fair, Shanahan doesn’t have too many options at the moment. Lance missed the game due to a knee injury he suffered in Week 5. And it’s likely that played a factor in whether or not Shanahan would have made a move during the game.

“I got a whole team to worry about,” Shanahan said. “Not just thinking about what the quarterback situation is right now. I’m going to evaluate everything, see where our team’s at, see what gives us the best chance to beat Chicago, and see what our options are. That’s what you go into each week, finding out your options. We had two quarterbacks who were hurting this week. Jimmy was able to come back and play. We’ll see if Trey can (play) next week, we’re still not sure yet, but I got a lot of things to figure out.”
