The San Francisco 49ers suffered another major loss when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was taken off the field Sunday against the Miami Dolphins with a broken foot.

This is the second time this season that the 9ers lost a starting quarterback. Earlier this year, they lost Trey Lance to an injury as well.

Garoppolo is now out for the season but according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, Jimmy Garoppolo may not have broken his foot.

“They were talking about it last night but they’re starting to believe that it isn’t [broken], so that’s good news,” Shanahan said, per Cam Inman of The Mercury News. “But it’s not all done. They have to finalize it so we don’t want to give you any false information.”

Garoppolo suffered a shoulder injury during the 9ers playoff run last year but elected to wait til the end of the season to get surgery. It is a sad end for the QB who lost his starting position to Lance, only to gain it back, play well and then  once again come be injured.

The good news for the team is that they didn’t fall apart after Garopplo left and they were able to defeat the Miami Dolphins behind rookie quarterback Brock Purdy who was 25-of-37 for 210 yards, and two touchdowns.
