Monday night’s game between the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals was officially Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray’s final one of the 2022 NFL season as an MRI has confirmed that he suffered a torn ACL.

“An MRI confirmed Kyler Murray indeed has a torn ACL, source said,” first reported Kyle Odegard.

On the third play from scrimmage in the first quarter, Murray scrambled to his right. The Cardinals quarterback tried to cut to the inside but fell to the ground quickly after planting his right leg.

Murray then had to be carted off the field.

Murray was replaced by Colt McCoy in the game and is likely to remain the starter for the team for the remainder of the season. The Cardinals lost the game, 27-13, and dropped to 4-9 on the season. It’s unlikely that they’ll be able to make the playoffs and it has to be seen as something of a disappointing year given the hype heading in. That’s sure to be compounded by the disappointment Murray must be feeling due to his injury.

The NFL world shared its own disappointment on Murray’s behalf over the injury, along with sharing their hopes that his recovery goes well and he’ll be back in uniform next season.

“Interested to see how Kliff Kingsbury and Cardinals can salvage season with Murray out,” said Fox Sports writer Eric Williams.

“Brutal confirmation for Kyler,” wrote USA Today’s Art Stapleton. “Just a devastating blow to him and the Cardinals. Not only does QB1 tear his ACL, but tears it in mid-December, putting the start of next season in jeopardy.”

“Disappointing but expect to hear the confirmation,” wrote Dr. David Chao. “Given the type of player he is, no guarantee to be ready or 100% for Week 1 next season.”
