The Detroit Lions are looking to win the Super Bowl and bring the Lombardi Trophy back to the Motor City for the first time in franchise history. However, if the Lions manage to do this, it’ll be quite the feat considering all of the changes to the coaching staff.
Detroit lost its coordinators on both sides of the ball to head coaching jobs around the league. The Lions’ 2024 defensive coordinator, Aaron Glenn, is now leading the New York Jets, and thier former offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, is the head coach of the Chicago Bears.
While the Lions’ defense has been solid this year, the offense, led by new offensive coordinator John Morton, has not looked like the same unit as when Johnson was calling the plays. Then, surprisingly, Detroit accumulated over 500 yards on offense in a blowout road win over the Washington Commanders, the offense’s best showing of the season.
After the game, one prominent NFL insider reported on what changed for the game, and things started making more sense.
“Lions HC Dan Campbell acknowledged to reporters after today’s win in Washington that he took over the offensive play-calling duties from OC John Morton,” ESPN’s top NFL insider Adam Schefter reported earlier in the week.

Now, we have Morton’s take on being forced to step down as the offensive play caller.
“I fully support it. I wanna do whatever it takes to win,” Morton said, according to The Detroit Times.
Fans reacted to Morton’s words on social media.
“Not all offensive coordinators call plays. Maybe he has to step back and watch what Dan Campbell does then he can adjust his philosophy or style,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Great reaction from him. Tbh didn’t expected anything less and like Dan said, watching him will improve his calls,” someone else added.
“Hard to be upset by one of the most winningest head coach’s decision in modern football era,” another fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see if Morton ever assumes play-calling duties again this season or is given another opportunity in his career.
