New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones attempted to go behind the back of head coach Bill Belichick to fix the team’s woeful offense, according to NBC Sports and Pro Football Talk analyst Chris Simms.
Mike Florio, who hosted the segment, said that Belichick made Jones “aware [that he knew of his move.]” That ended all “outside conversations” during the eventual 8-9 season that saw the Patriots miss the playoffs.
“Mac Jones wasn’t happy,” Simms told Pro Football Talk. “He was telling people he wasn’t happy. He was calling people about, ‘Hey, can you help us with ideas and do stuff like that?’
“From my understanding, Belichick found out all these things. He found out that Mac was talking to people, and all this, and there was some back-channel conversations going on behind Belichick’s back. And I think that’s where it did get personal.”
Jones, Belichick, or the Patriots have yet to comment on the apparent backroom feud that would have undoubtedly played a role in the Patriots missing the playoffs.
The Patriots originally selected Mac Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft with the No. 15 overall selection. Though the official parties have yet to comment, it sounds like that relationship could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.
