Several years ago, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was part of one of the most infamous plays in NFL history when he fumbled the football after running into the backside of one of his own offensive linemen. The “butt fumble” went absolutely viral back in 2012. And a decade later, it might have a worthy successor in the “butt punt.”
During the fourth quarter of Sunday afternoon’s game between the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills, Dolphins punter Thomas Morstead was punting from deep in Dolphins’ territory. With the ball on the one-yard line, Morstead didn’t have a lot of room to get the punt away. As a result, the punt went right off the backside of the team’s up-back.
When Sanchez saw the clip, he offered quite the honest and self-deprecating response.
Woah… stay out of my lane bro @thomasmorstead 🤪 #NFL https://t.co/O5ZKUgmSNl

“Woah… stay out of my lane bro,” Sanchez said in a Tweet.
While the botched punt was quite the hilarious blooper, it ultimately wasn’t very costly to the Dolphins. Miami was able to hold off a late surge from Josh Allen and the Bills, giving them their first loss of the season – much to the displeasure of Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. The Dolphins, meanwhile, improved to 3-0 on the season.
