Matt Nagy is almost certainly going to get fired as head coach of the Chicago Bears sooner than later. Following back-to-back eight-win seasons, Nagy’s Bears are 5-10 with two games left in the NFL season. While the team did pull off a surprising win over the Seattle Seahawks this past weekend, all signs point to his time in Chicago as being over.

Nagy, whose play-calling has been a point of pain for Bears fans for a few years now, met with reporters on Monday and was asked if he is working under the assumption that he will remain the head coach of the Bears through the season and he answered “Yes.”

He was also asked if he would be meeting with Bears officials to discuss year-end evaluations soon.

“We stay on the same path as far as the communication that we have with George [McCaskey], Ted [Phillips], Ryan [Pace], and myself,” Nagy said. “Nothing’s changed there. And every year you’re always aware of the situation of your team and players, coaches, all that stuff. And we’re continuing to move forward this week and prepare for the Giants. … I think we all owe that to each other, for today and for this week with the Giants and finishing out this week on a high note trying to get a win. And then doing it again in the final game of the season. So to answer your question, nothing has changed as far as communication that way.”

Nagy’s handling of Justin Fields this season, coupled with many other curious decisions he’d made that have angered the Chicago faithful, has made it a foregone conclusion that his time is coming to an end there. And the reaction on social media seemed to confirm that.

As some have pointed out, the NFL rules allow teams with coaching vacancies to start conducting interviews as soon as Tuesday. That means the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars will get the jump on hiring their new coaches before the Bears do, assuming they don’t fire Nagy or inform him of being fired now.
