Will Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson end up as quarterback of the Miami Dolphins? Not according to Miami’s general manager.

Speaking to reporters on the situation, general manager Chris Grier made it clear that Watson was not in the team’s future.

“The door is shut on Deshaun,” Grier said, per Josh Alper, Pro Football Talk.

Since he requested a trade in January of 2021, the Dolphins have been consistently rumored to be one of Watson’s most interested suitors. Even a murky legal situation hasn’t done much to quell the reported interest in Watson.

What has changed in Miami is the coaching situation. Brian Flores was fired, under controversial circumstances. Mike McDaniel is now the head coach. We saw McDaniel and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa talk shortly after McDaniel was hired. Maybe the new coach does see something in Tagovailoa that he thinks can be unlocked in the quarterback’s third season. It’s also possible that McDaniel, Grier and the Dolphins have another signal-caller in mind.

Grier’s comments come shortly after comments from Houston’s general manager, Nick Caserio, who said that the Texans were taking Watson’s situation day to day? The words of his Miami counterpart show how necessary that approach is.

Assuming Grier is telling the truth, one of the teams that wanted Watson the most is now out of the sweepstakes. Since the end of the 2020 season, Watson’s situation has been highly uncertain. These comments show that it remains as fluid as ever.
