While the Pittsburgh Steelers offense has not been dominant this season, resulting in the firing of offensive coordinator Matt Canada, the team’s defense has been strong enough to give them a 6-4 record and keep them in playoff contention. And a big reason for that is the play of star defensive end T.J. Watt.

During a recent press conference, head coach Mike Tomlin got pretty candid about just what Watt has meant to the team this season, calling him “the best defensive player on the planet.”

“Not only for the defense but for our football team,” Tomlin said according to the Pittsburgh Steelers team website. “There is a lot to learn from him in terms of how he goes about his business, how he works to maximize his talent level. What he does to maintain a level of production. Let’s be honest. T.J. is the best defensive player on the planet right now. And he proves that week in and week out with the plays that he delivers us.”

Watt has certainly lived up to that statement throughout his career, even earning the NFL’s defensive MVP award back in 2021. The team is going to need his dominance down the stretch if they’re going to make a run in the postseason.
