The Minnesota Vikings will face a decision on what to do with franchise quarterback Kirk Cousins sooner rather than later.

The Vikings selected former BYU Cougars quarterback Jarren Hall in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, which concluded this weekend.

But while the Vikings injected young blood behind Cousins, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said that Cousins has done enough that he doesn’t need to prove anything to him this upcoming season.

“Kirk doesn’t need to show anything to me,” Adofo-Mensah told reporters Saturday night, according to NFL.com. “Kirk has played football at a high level before I got to the Minnesota Vikings. Last year, we won 13 games. I don’t know what he would need to prove to me or anybody else.”

Adofo-Mensah also clarified why the franchise didn’t extend Cousins in March, saying it was the best solution at the time.

“When you go into a contract negotiation, you’re trying to come up with solutions together,” he said. “It’s not just what Kwesi wants or what the Vikings want or even what Kirk wants. It’s what we can do together and ultimately put together that Lombardi [Trophy]. And sometimes you come to a place where you decide, ‘Hey, let’s talk later. This is a solution for now.’ That’s all that’s happened.”

Only time will tell how Cousins and the Vikings work out. But for now, he has the confidence of the general manager. Though it looks like a poor season could certainly change their thinking.
