The New Orleans Saints were blindsided by the shocking retirement of franchise quarterback Derek Carr due to a lingering shoulder injury. The Saints responded by holding a quarterback competition for the starting job this training camp.
The contenders to win the competition are veterans Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener, and rookie Tyler Shough. However, heading into the Saints’ last preseason game of the season, a major decision regarding the competition has been made, according to one prominent league insider.
“The New Orleans Saints — the only team that hasn’t decided on a starting quarterback for opening day — will start QB Spencer Rattler in Saturday’s preseason finale vs. the Denver Broncos,” reported ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“The saints are like a (bad) restaurant. Doesn’t matter what they serve your getting food poisoning,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I think you have to double down and start Tyler for the home opener or they look like bozos taking him over Shedeur Sanders,” another fan added.
“How the hell have the Saints not fired Mickey Loomis yet? One of the worst teams in football and projected -$25 million in cap next year, all while trading draft picks for a 28 year old second year receiver,” someone else wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see if Rattler can secure the permanent job in his start.
