The New Orleans Saints were blindsided by the retirement of franchise quarterback Derek Carr due to a lingering shoulder injury this offseason. Now, the Saints are in the middle of an open competition to figure out who the guy will be for Week One.
On one hand, the Saints had a positive day of practice on Thursday, according to one prominent league insider.
“I’ve seen a lot of practices in my 26 years covering the Saints, and today was one of the best that I can remember from strictly a competitive standpoint. Plays being made from both sides, at all levels, from all over the field. Good stuff,” reported Jeff Duncan.
Unfortunately, one of the quarterbacks vying for the job didn’t do so great, per Duncan.
“At the same time, Tyler Shough might have overseen/directed the worst 2-minute drive in the history of the NFL during situational work late in the practice.”
Fans reacted to the brutal news on social media.
“Drafting a QB at 40TH OVERALL that everybody knew stunk instead of just ridding 1 season with Rattler and drafting a QB with a top 7 pick next year if he stinks is why the Saints have been spinning their wheels since Brees retired,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“The running threat QB, isn’t REALLY allowed to use his legs. Yeah, I’ll wait until we play someone, instead of ourselves. I’ve seen “writers” complain about Shough taking the check down instead of a high risk ball, in one breath. Then say how great the DBs look in the next,” wrote someone else.
“I could’ve gone the rest of the day without reading that,” added another fan.
It’ll be interesting to see who wins the Saints’ job.
