The New York Giants recently hit running back Saquon Barkley with the franchise tag to keep him off the open market.

Now, the team would like to extend that contract to keep him in New York for the foreseeable future.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen recently contacted Barkley’s representation and sent them a clear message about wanting his services for the long term. The two sides talked before the NFL Draft to gauge the “appetite” for a deal from Barkley’s team, and the two agreed to circle back after the draft.

“At some point over the next couple of days, we’ll circle back up, and we’ll have some conversations as to where we are, where they may be, and see if we can get something done,” Schoen told NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.

“Listen, Saquon is a very good football player, captain last year. He’s a good locker room guy. I love him. We want him to be here,” Schoen said. “But you’ve got to have a deal where both parties are happy with where you end up. That’s what we’re going to try to work for and see if we can get something we can both agree on.”

Saquon will earn $10.091 million with the franchise tag next season. The deadline for a new, multiyear deal is July 17th.
