The New York Jets – along with all other teams in the NFL – have made it clear that they do not want to be the subject of HBO’s Hard Knocks television series. But they might not have a choice, and it sounds like they’re preparing for the worst in that regard.
According to a report from league insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the New York Jets are currently “bracing” for the league to force Hard Knocks upon them.
“Per a league source, the Jets are bracing for the preseason Hard Knocks assignment, despite making known publicly (and privately) their lack of interest in serving as the focal point of this year’s show,” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk on Monday.
As Florio explains, there are several factors that make them a candidate for the Hard Knocks assignment even though they’ve publically stated they do not want to be a part of the series this year.
“The Jets, Saints, Bears, and Commanders fit the criteria for being required to do the show in the 2023 preseason. Under a formula developed several years ago, the teams that can be compelled to do it include those without a new head coach, those who have not been to the playoffs in either of the last two years, and those that have not been the subject of the show for the last ten years,” Florio wrote.
It’s a pretty brutal update for the Jets, and the NFL world had plenty to say about it.

Whatever helps disrupt their season. I want nothing but failure for that org, their fans, & their diva QB. https://t.co/OmwS0qIxMr

I mean, you don't make that team a prime time darling for nothing. Definitely them. https://t.co/IZpPyf6n6W

Selfishly, as a viewer, I'm very happy. But obviously I hope Coach Saleh, Mr. Rodgers, and the rest of the team handle the distractions well. #Jets #TakeFlight https://t.co/82Jz8Mu29b

The Jets are one of the more intriguing teams in the league after their offseason addition of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, so it makes sense that the league and HBO would be interested in forcing Hard Knocks upon them.
