It’s been no secret over the past few weeks that the New York Jets were interested in veteran free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. However, the former All-Pro wide receiver ultimately signed with Baltimore Ravens instead. And it appears the Jets lost him for one simple and quite brutal reason: money.

While the Jets were likely hoping to get Beckham at a discount to help bolster their receiving corps as the team added Aaron Rodgers, it became clear that wouldn’t be the case after Baltimore’s offer. And according to Connor Hughes of SNY, the Jets simply were not willing or able to pay him that much.

“Odell Beckham Jr. called the #Jets last night & gave them a chance to match the offer he got from the #Ravens, per sources. They were never going that high, though. Again, with Jets, he’s their No. 3. Ravens gave him a better deal. He took it,” Hughes wrote on Twitter on Sunday night.

Obviously, the Jets’ inability to match the deal given to Beckham by the Ravens means that the team is missing out on a talented wide receiver that could have helped bolster their offense. And the NFL world had plenty to say about it, with many people refusing to believe that Beckham would have been the team’s No. 3 receiver behind Allen Lazard.

We’ll have to see what the Jets choose to do after missing out on Beckham.
