Cam Newton feels like there’s a target on his back, and not just from opposing defensive players either. Following a rough and tumble game with the Arizona Cardinals this past weekend, Newton went public with his claims of refs missing calls on him that aren’t missed on other quarterbacks.

He may have a point…sort of.

NFL Vice President of Officiating Dean Blandino admitted to missing “a couple of calls” for roughing the passer when it comes to Cam Newton.

However, Blandino also went on to note that there have been other roughing calls missed against other quarterbacks in the league too.

“We review every play from every game and we’ve looked at all of Carolina’s snaps, and we missed two roughing the passer calls on Cam this year, and that’s not where we want to be. It’s not specific to Cam, it’s all the quarterbacks because the same rules apply to everyone. Based on our numbers, there have been more missed calls on other quarterbacks, and obviously we’ve had missed calls on other quarterbacks as well. And our goal is to have none.”

In other words, it isn’t a Cam Newton thing, but a football being a human game thing. But, Blandino also noted that there are consequences for officials who miss calls like this and others.

“They are held accountable for the mistakes they make. We have a rigid evaluation system that includes looking at every play of every game, and they get a game report and they get graded like players do. We look at that at the end of the season when we assign the postseason, and then for retention purposes. If an official isn’t grading out over the course of a season or several seasons we have to look at making a move. So they are held accountable and we have had turnover in recent seasons.”

The V.P. of Officiating also gave us a great breakdown of the situation Newton faced against the New Orleans Saints.

So, as Newton cries foul he may actually be helping other quarterbacks in the league more than himself.
