Somebody wake Jay Cutler up when he has an offensive line to play behind.

The Chicago Bears are having a flat-out awful season, and so is quarterback Jay Cutler. That continued Sunday with a 36-10 loss on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was brutal, and Cutler once again played a starring role in the disappointment.

Cutler completed 16 of 30 pass attempts for 182 yards and a touchdown (we’ll get back to that one in a moment), but he was picked off on back-to-back pass attempts in the first quarter, the second of which was returned for a touchdown by Chris Conte.

It was just the latest downward spiral in a career-long roller coaster ride for Cutler. At times, Cutler looks like he is capable of being one of the best passers in the league. However, seemingly every time he takes one step forward, he then seems to take two steps back. The Bears’ problems aren’t all his fault, but over 11 years, that is a lot of steps back.

But there was some good to show off from Cutler on Sunday. At the end of the first half, Cutler unloaded on a 50-yard Hail Mary to cut Tampa Bay’s 14-point lead to seven when Cameron Meredith came down with the football in the end zone.

But even this diamond in the rough moment was not nearly enough to change the outcome of the game, or the narrative for the Bears and Cutler.

Yep. Jay Cutler is the NFL’s Charlie Brown. How he has not played for the Cleveland Browns yet is beyond comprehension. Or maybe that’s coming soon?
