Ahead of the deadline for declining or accepting his fifth-year option, the Green Bay Packers have made a huge decision on Jordan Love’s future.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday that the Packers have agreed to terms with Love on a new contract through the 2024 season. According to Pelissero, the deal is a one-year extension that can be worth up to $22.5 million, including $13.5 million guaranteed.
Rather than exercise his option, the Packers and Love’s representation, instead, agreed to a one-year extension that replaces the 24-year-old quarterback’s existing deal. While Love was slated to make a fully-guaranteed $20 million salary in 2024, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunt seemed a bit apprehensive to commit to giving Love that full salary just yet, considering he has just one career start to his name.
“It’s a lot of money for a guy who hasn’t played,” Gutekunst recently said. “But at the same time, obviously, we’re moving forward with him. So, we’ll figure that out by Tuesday.”
Just eight days after trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, this is as good a signal as any that the Packers are ready to commit to Love as their quarterback of the future. While Love has made just one start in his entire NFL career, the Packers are moving forward with the former first-round pick out of Utah State as the team’s full-time starter.
