Carolina Panthers star Brian Burns “definitely” wants to be among the highest-paid players at his position in the NFL.
The Panthers defensive end spoke to the media at Panthers minicamp on Tuesday. David Newton of ESPN wrote, “Burns, a 2019 first-round pick and two-time Pro Bowl selection, said Tuesday after the first of the team’s two-day mandatory minicamp that he “definitely” wants to be among the highest-paid at his position.”
Newton continued: “But Burns acknowledged that his agent and the Panthers are having conversations about a new deal as he enters the fifth year of his rookie deal with a salary cap hit of $16,012,000.”
Burns has become one of the brightest young stars in the NFL. The former Florida State standout has recorded 38 sacks in four seasons. He’s on the heels of a career-high 12.5 in the 2022 season. The turnover in Carolina hasn’t diminished his play as he seems to be getting better each year.
Burns has the 14th-highest cap hit in the NFL among edge players, according to Spotrac. The Panthers star’s total of $16,012,000 ranks him above players like Joey Bosa and Chandler Jones. But he falls below the likes of DeMarcus Lawrence, Randy Gregory, and Khalil Mack, who all separate him from the 10th slot, which Miami’s Emmanuel Ogbah holds.
It’s pretty likely that the Panthers get the deal done eventually, so Brian Burns’ desires will probably be met.
