17. Panthers (26): As prodigal son Cam Newton prepares to reclaim QB1 status in Carolina, you have to wonder if injured Sam Darnold — he’s guaranteed nearly $19 million in 2022 — is already entering the backup phase of a career that doesn’t yet span four seasons. Syndication Usa Today

If Cam Newton wants to return to the Carolina Panthers, it will be under different circumstances than he’s used to. Newton can come back to the team with the understanding that he’ll be paid a smaller salary and that he won’t be the starter next season. That’s according to the Charlotte Observer.

Newton came back to the team last year and started five games for the Panthers, throwing for 684 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions in eight total appearances. Newton had sat out half of last season after being cut by the New England Patriots when the team named rookie Mac Jones as the starter.

Now, Newton finds himself in a similar situation where it looks like he won’t be the starter, but this time he has the chance to stay aboard and help out.

His history says he probably won’t do it, especially as the Panthers are rebuilding. But Panthers GM Scott Fitterer told Mike Florio that he has been in contact with the quarterback.

“I think we’re still having thoughts,” he said. “We have to see how this works out here throughout the spring. I just happened to be up at the [Kentucky] Derby last weekend and Cam was up there. We’re texting a little bit. The lines of communication are open. I know Coach Rhule has spoken with him. We are going to have a discussion at some point but we’re just not quite there yet, but we’ll see how it goes. The more competition we have at that position the better.”
