The Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in unfamiliar territory right now. After winning the Super Bowl two seasons ago and making a return trip last year, the franchise is pretty used to being near the top of the NFL standings. Following a Week 1 win to start the season, the Chiefs have lost two close games in a row and now find themselves at the bottom of the AFC West at 1-2.

Sure, it’s very early in the 2021 NFL season, but every game counts, and given that both the Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos have gotten out to 3-0 starts, the Chiefs don’t have a ton of leeway when it comes to winning their sixth consecutive AFC West crown.

But don’t think this rough start has discouraged quarterback Patrick Mahomes. On Wednesday, the 2018 NFL MVP told reporters that he sees this as an opportunity for the team to get focused.

“It’s exciting. Now you know you have to go,” Mahomes said. “We’ve put our back against the wall. So how are we going to respond? I think you’ll get the best out of everybody. You’ll get the best out of every person in this locker room because you know that it’s time to go now. Every game matters if you want to do what we want to do and I’m excited to see how these guys respond, myself included.”

It’s probably not too smart to count the Chiefs out despite the 1-2 start. They’ve still got Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and now Josh Gordon is in the mix. Couple that with Andy Reid and OC Eric Bieniemy calling plays and there’s no reason to think KC can’t rebound and get back on track this season.
