Over the past few years, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as established himself as pretty undeniably the most valuable player in the entire NFL, but he currently isn’t compensated that way. However, it seems like that’s about to change.
According to a report from league insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are expected to come to terms with a deal before the start of the 2023 NFL season that would make Mahomes the highest-paid player in the history of the league, overtaking Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson.
Florio said that “based on our conversations with folks aware of the dynamics of the situation” fans should expect that deal to happen sooner than later.
“Expect Mahomes, before the season begins, to once again be the highest-paid player in league history,”Florio wrote. “The details will be interesting, and subject to differing interpretations. Because Mahomes has nine years left on his current contract, a new-money APY in excess of $52 million per year would be obtained simply by tacking three years and a penny more than $156 million on the back end of the existing deal.”
It’s pretty insane news, especially given that the Chiefs had not publically committed to restructuring Mahomes’ contract. And the NFL world had plenty to say about it on Twitter.
Will let Herbert and Burrow go, and then jump back in at the top
Hopefully for his sake this time around, the priority is the actual cash flows in the early years and not the total value/APY https://t.co/80MhvxP18z

He's the best in the league and it's not close. He definitely deserves it, but can we trust Florio after what he said about the Chiefs just last week? lol. https://t.co/vKqazhZE8n

Looks like the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes will redo his deal. Don’t blame him for wanting to revisit it – Lamar Jackson makes $7M more per year. https://t.co/n7bMxPIoEU

It will certainly be interesting to see what the deal looks like when it is eventually finalized.
