Another week, another terrible roughing the passer penalty in an NFL game.

In what is becoming more and more commonplace across the NFL, Sunday’s game between the New England Patriots and Washington Commanders featured one of the worst roughing the passer calls of the season.

Washington rookie pass rusher K.J. Henry appeared to record a big stop on third down, rushing Patriots quarterback Mac Jones from his blind side and sacking him, pushing New England out of field goal range and forcing a punt.

Or, he would have, had he not been penalized for… sacking Jones?

It’s virtually impossible at this point to see what Henry could or should have done differently there, as it appeared to be a perfect blindside form tackle. If that’s a penalty, there’s genuinely not much more pass rushers can do at this point once they get to quarterbacks.

New England kicked a field goal later in the drive to push their lead to 17-10 thanks to the penalty extending the drive.

Fans on social media were fuming over the call.

“When will there be accountability for the refs?” One fan asked. “Fines, suspensions, extra training?”

“Really not sure what we expect defensive players to do on plays like this.” Another fan said. “I’m all for player safety but this was literally a run-of-the-mill sack.”

“Funny how we fine players thousands of dollars for celebrating a touchdown but refs can alter the outcome of a game and no action is taken,” another fan said.

Another fan said, “They’re legitimately asking defensive players to defy physics out here It’s ridiculous.”
