New England Patriots

The New England Patriots were confident they had their franchise quarterback of the future in young talent Drake Maye. However, Maye’s rookie season didn’t go exactly as planned.

Maye took over from Jacoby Brisset as the starter mid-season, but the Pats only went 4-13 in the season. The last start of the season went to New England’s other rookie quarterback, Joe Milton.

Milton impressed in his professional debut, throwing for 241 yards and a touchdown. Many wondered if Milton was the guy for the Patriots moving forward, and it appears the franchise has made its decision.

“Trade: New England is sending QB Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys, sources tell ESPN. With Cooper Rush going to Baltimore, Dallas now has a new backup for Dak Prescott,” reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who then followed up his initial report.

“Just the other day, Cowboys executive Stephen Jones told reporters: “We’re not done yet. We still got some things that are outstanding that we’re trying to get done.” Joe Milton was a trade the Cowboys were trying to get done. Now they have the trade and a new backup for Dak Prescott.”

Fans reacted to the news that the Pats lost Milton’s talent on social media.

“After the 2026 season Dak’s contract has no guarantee money. Milton would enter his final season under contact in 2027 and could be the future for much less than Dak’s money. Jerry Jones would be 85 years old in 2027,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“What did the patriots get back for him? What a dumb move to trade him. He looked great,” another fan added.

“They have a lot more to do if they want to compete for a championship. Let alone compete for the division,” someone else added.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Patriots end up regretting going with Maye over Milton.
