The Seattle Seahawks have quite the task ahead of themselves this season as they attempt to replace longtime quarterback Russell Wilson with either Geno Smith or Drew Lock. While the battle for the No. 1 spot continues, it sounds like head coach Pete Carroll is “surprised” by one of the competitors.

Smith has been slotted as the starter in Seattle’s first preseason game, which makes sense given that he’s more familiar with the offense and playbook. However, Carroll recently told reporters that he likes what he’s been seeing from Lock, who came over from the Denver Broncos in the Wilson trade.

“I’m surprised at some stuff that Drew does,” Carroll said, via Gregg Bell of The News Tribune. “His movement. His natural ability. His ability to move and throw the ball with his feet in awkward positions at times to get the ball out, his quickness of release. I saw that stuff, but until I saw the person, I didn’t know.

“He’s really talented. He has a lot of skills, man, and the game is easy for him in that sense. Physically, he can make all the throws, do the movements, run with the football. We’ve seen him run a lot out here and take off and go. So, it’s just been kind of the whole package that’s been a surprise to see that he’s just well-equipped. Now, it’s just down to the competition of it.”

While many in the Seahawks world have thrown their support behind Geno, and many outside of the Seahawks camp have had some fun with their interest in Lock, it sounds like Drew will get the chance to repair his reputation and, just maybe, have the last laugh.
