He’s never been shy about sharing his opinions, but now that former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is long retired and co-hosting the ManningCast on ESPN with his brother, Eli, he’s leaned into making some bold declarations about some of the league’s current quarterbacks.
Ahead of Super Bowl LVII, Peyton was asked bluntly by TMZ whether Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has done enough in his career to already be considered a Hall of Famer.
“I don’t think Patrick thinks in those terms,” Manning told TMZ on Friday. “Patrick is in the moment, right? He won his second MVP last night — was a no-brainer — but the fact that he’s in his third Super Bowl in four years, that’s all he cares about. But yes, the answer to that question is yes, but that’s just not on his radar. And it shouldn’t be, he should be in the moment and kicking butt for the Chiefs.”
In his sixth NFL season, Mahomes threw for 5,250 yards with 41 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions, good enough for a 105.2 passer rating. In the prime of his career, Mahomes already has a good enough résumé to be enriched among the game’s greats in Canton, as he has two MVP awards, to go with two First-Team All-Pro and five Pro-Bowl selections. Oh yeah, and a Super Bowl ring.
Regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s game, it’s clear that one of the game’s best quarterbacks already has a definitive answer for Mahomes’ Hall of Fame case. Though, Peyton was pretty clear that that’s the last thing the 27-year-old quarterback should be worried about with Super Bowl LVII on the horizon.
