The San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins were two NFL teams this past season that dealt with issues at the quarterback position related to injuries and long absences. Both teams were thought to consider potentially bringing in a veteran quarterback during the season to stem the tide.

Curiously enough, Rich Eisen returned from the NFL Combine after hearing that longtime NFL quarterback Philip Rivers, who is currently a head coach for a high school football team in Alabama, inquired with both teams about potentially returning.

“We all know two teams that were quarterback-needy at the end of the season,” said Eisen. “Starting third-stringers and had a chance to go to the playoffs and maybe make a deep run in the playoffs. I’m referring to the Miami Dolphins and of course the San Francisco 49ers. I heard, at the combine, that Philip Rivers contacted both of them to come back late last year.”

When asked to clarify that it was Rivers who inquired and not the teams, Eisen doubled down.

“Philip Rivers contacted both of them, is what I heard, and that’s the way I heard it,” said Eisen. “Didn’t happen. Don’t know why it didn’t happen.”

Eisen is clear to point out this is a rumor he heard and not a confirmed fact, but it certainly seems plausible that the 41-year-old who played 17 years in the NFL might want one more shot in the sun while he still can.
