Every now and then, a new sensation emerges from out of nowhere in the sports world. The NFL is never a stranger to this, and Week 1 of the 2023 regular season kicked off in grand style. The first Sunday was eventful and featured a previously unknown rookie bursting with an electric performance. Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua was the star of the day, and you’d have never been able to guess that before the day began.

Nacua played terrific in the Rams’ upset win over the Seahawks at Lumen Field. He caught 10 passes and amassed 119 yards in his pro debut. While he didn’t score any receiving touchdowns, he wasn’t alone. Matthew Stafford was unable to crack the code and couldn’t find any receivers for touchdowns, leaving the game with 334 yards and no scores. That certainly doesn’t take away from his absurd showing, a game that 99 percent of receivers would love to have.

The NFL world was buzzing about Puka Nacua and his showing all evening.

Dylan Powell said, “Puka Nacua really just went off for 10 receptions 119 yards on 15 targets… …as a rookie 5th round pick in his first career game.”

NFL Next Gen Stats put Nacua’s performance in perspective.

“Puka Nacua was targeted 15 times in his NFL debut, the most by a rookie in Week 1 over the last eight seasons (44.1% target rate). Nacua had most of his production come in the short area (0-9 air yards), where he caught 6 of 9 targets for 64 yards.”

So Nacua was able to exploit the short part of the field all afternoon and was reliable as ever. He averaged nearly 11 yards per reception in that area on those six catches.

ESPN Stats & Info boasted over his performance.

“Puka Nacua had 10 receptions for 119 receiving yards tonight. He becomes the 4th player in NFL history to have 10 receptions and over 100 receiving yards in 1st career game,” they said. Nacua joins Keke Coutee, Anquan Boldin, and Sid Blanks in that category.

And the team noted that he surpassed Cooper Kupp for the most receiving yards for a Rams rookie in their debut.

Not just that, either. Nacua racked up the most yards for any rookie in Rams history. That’s an illustrious list of guys that includes Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, and Flipper Anderson, who still holds the single-game record for receiving yards in a game.

It’ll be a day Nacua never forgets.
