One major domino that needs to fall in the NFL offseason is where former Super Bowl champion Matthew Stafford will be playing next season. After a season that saw him at times struggle to perform consistently at the lofty standards he’s set over the course of his career, rumors circulated that Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams were headed toward divorce.
Now, it appears a resolution to the situation may come sooner than expected, according to some prominent NFL insiders.
“The Rams are set to meet with Matthew Stafford at their facility in person today regarding his future, per sources. The Raiders and Giants have discussed a two-year contract for Stafford that includes $90-100M guaranteed. A decision is expected soon,” reported The Athletic’s Diana Russini early on Friday.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport then provided an update of his own on Friday.
“A Matthew Stafford decision looms, and his return to the (Rams) feels more likely to those involved. Nothing final. But clearly more likely than a few days ago when it appeared he was set to leave.”
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“team’s invested in him, and he’s still got gas in the tank. Giants or Raiders would’ve been a gamble anyway,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Stafford is a top five quarterback, and the Rams would be idiots to let him go ,in my opinion,” one fan added.
“Imagine, Goff has a season ending injury in training camp, lions trade for Stanford, he wins de super bowl and get his redemption,” someone else wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see how the situation resolves itself.
